How Marketing in the Music Industry has changed

The music industry has changed immensely as it is now has to adapt to the audiences demands through the use of technology, this has meant that the music industry rapidly moving in terms of evolvement, constantly changing. As an audience we are presented many ways in which we can consume music in todays world whether we'd be downloading wirelessly from our laptops or file sharing across mobile phones as well as many more.
We can all discover music through the power of the internet and because of this it has changed how we gain access to music whether it be legally or illegally. An example of illegal websites that allow end users to download music for free would be 'LimeWire' or 'Pirate Bay'.

LimeWire Software

However there are websites that own software that actively allow end users to download music either for free or for a small fee. An example of these legal websites would be 'Spotify' and iTunes'.

Upcoming artists could use software called 'SoundCloud' which allows them to upload any music they have produced to get their name out there and heard as others have the option to download it.
Illegal downloading and file sharing have brought up problems for record companies as well as record stores such as 'HMV'. Stores such as HMV will be feeling the crunch mostly which has seen a severe decrease in the population who purchase albums and singles.

Therefore artists can't rely on sales of their albums or singles in record stores so instead must embrace the power of the media which is ever so vastly growing in terms of technology. Artists can now use social networking websites to market their music as well as websites such as 'Youtube' which can be used to gather a loyal fan base and get their name out there. An example of an artist getting themselves known would be the likes of 'Lily Allen' and 'Deadmau5'.

Star Image - Eminem

  • Eminem has an explosive nature which is represented through dynamite and the toy gun
  • The toy gun also shows that he is comical
  • In terms of his music his lyrics are usually personal and serious in most of his songs, about his life but sometimes produces songs that are comical i.e. 'The Real Slim Shady'
  • He has built a strong relationship with fans which has led him to bring out his own film '8 Mile' gaining even more popularity for himself
  • Eminem has adopted two images one being the gangster rapper represented through his style of clothing flat caps etc. The other being a respectable family man shown through his lyrics of his daughters as well as his relationships. This shows that he is different to the typical gangster rapper.
